Mozy.com Online Backup

The Web

I never thought it would happen to me.  I’m a computer savvy guy, I think.  Hard drives don’t fail on the computer savvy, do they?  Yes Ryan, yes they do.  It happened to me this weekend we lost the Maxtor 40gb hard drive in our Dell Dimension 8300.  With that, gone are some pictures that my wife had worked on (luckily not the originals), about six years worth of bank records and one year worth of school work for my Masters.

The good news is that the Dell Dimension 8300 is back up and running after a quick run to Wal-Mart for a 80gb Western Digital hard drive.  Oh yes, Wal-Mart now sells hard drives.  Where else can you get diapers, milk and a hard drive in one trip?

Needless to say this incident sent me looking for an backup solution, and not just a solution to back up to my bigger 250gb Western Digital hard drive, no.  After all that’s a hard drive too.  No, I wanted something more.  I wanted a web back up solution something that I could set up and have it do all the work.  After some searching I think I found one in mozy.com.  At mozy.com you get 2gb worth of backup space for free and unlimited space for $4.95 a month.  Additionally you can back up as many PCs on one account as you want.  PLUS it compresses the data before it uploads it to the mozy.com servers.  I had well over 2gb worth of data to be backed up yet I only used 550mb of back up storage.

So we’ll see how it goes, you can’t beat free and I appreciate the security of mozy being at work all the time.  I just logged into my account and I see that the last backup was ran a couple hours ago and I wasn’t even there!

If you are interested in mozy.com click on the link below.  It’s a referral link for my account.  For every four referrals I get an extra GIG of space for free!!!  So go ahead, sign up it will help you and me!

Good Day!

Sorry to tell you, pal. But you do not need a backup solution. Nobody needs backup, but the ability to restore fast, easily and without any retrieval process, because that process is usually the Achilles's heel of every backup, also when using online backup.
We personally use at home the free version of BOS (www.bos.co.il) for home users. But if you need more backup volume you can buy a home license up to the volume of your critical data.
Good luck!

I've been using Mozy for a while now and it's saved me a couple of times already. I love it's "set it and forget it" functionality.

Note about your blog- When resizing the window the page refreshes [IE6]. I had started a comment, resized, and it cleared my comment.

I tried Mozy over the weekend, it seems useful. I like how it encrypts all the info [400-something bit key] before uploading all the files, and how it schedules updates on its own.

My normal backup solution is I use multiple hard drives in my PC with multiple partitions. Then, about once a year I backup the most important files to about three DVDs. I know this is not the best way, especially if I have a hard, hard drive crash. I've only had soft ones that only have affected individual partitions, and could be fixed without replacing hardware. I also keep my DVDs close to the computer, which I know is also not the best way to go about it in case of fire, etc.

My last way of making backup files, for small files, is just to email myself an attachment on GMail.

Alex,
Thanks for the comments. I'll try to look at that resizing issues.

Any backup solution is a good one in my opinion. I was going to go the DVD route until I found mozy.com. I still probably will use DVDs for my photographs and MP3. Good idea about gmail too, it's actually saved me a couple times when I thought I deleted some key information.

Hello - unfortunately Mozy (and Carbonite) don't support NAS. I backup my internal disk to an external disk that allows me to keep the internal drive reasonably clean....I'd like to be able to backup the external data store to the cloud. Unfortunately niether of these products allow this yet....

Tahir,
I believe there is a version of mozy (http://www.mozypro.com/) which works to back up network drives.

MozyPro does not support NAS either. Lack of NAS support is the deal breaker for Carbonite, Mozy, etc.

I am looking at another service iDrive-E (idrive.com). They say they support mapped drives, and they have an unlimited plan that is $5/mo. Sounds perfect, but when I installed their software, my mapped drive was not recognized. I emailed their support team, we will see what happens.

Cool, let me know. You really can't beat $5 a month!! Do they give any discounts for a year long plan or anything?

My response from iDrive is different!

"Please note that our development team is working on the mapped drive support through IDrive-E application. We would update you, once we come out with the new version of IDrive-E application supporting mapped drives."

Seems like their left hand does not know what the right one is up to. I hope they can get their act together, seems so promising.

Tony - I got IDrive to see my mapped drives. Initially it couldn't, it just needed a reboot after installation and then it was fine.
Registered for the free service to try it out - you allegedly have 2gb of free capacity, so I tried backing up some old photographs (about 400MB) and the backup failed at around 220mb advising me that I had exceeded my capacity and that I should upgrade to a paid-for subscription!

Waiting for a response back from their Tech Support team.....looks like they got their sums wrong and really meant 200mb rather than 2000mb.....
Will let you know if resolved.
Software is easy to set up and pretty simple to use. The (classic) interface also shows your backup files as a remote folder - very impressive and so hopefully much easier if you need to restore.
Performance was slow - I have a 2mb Broadband connection and initially was gettting around 1,000kb, then this dropped to around 250 or so. 220mb took about 90 mins to backup before it failed.
Regards

Hello from a totally random person! I found your Mozy Referral Code with a Google search and have used it to sign up my account. I am doing my first backup right now. If we both end up with 256MB of additional free storage space, I will call that a true win-win!

Rob,
Thank you so much for the post. It's amazing how many referrals I've gotten just because of the blog. I was about to blog about it again. Do you remember what you googled for when you got my site?

You're quite welcome! I googled "mozy referral code" and your blog post came up about half way down the first page of results. I think I will put an entry with my new referral code and my initial impressions of mozy.com (which are quite positive so far)on my blog, too.

I've started using a free 1GB account from perfectbackup ( http://www.perfectbackup.co.uk ) about 6 months ago. Even though it is only a 1GB account my data gets compressed before being uploaded which means I have backed up 4.3GB onto a 1GB account! Further more I can backup multiple computers, NAS drives and local USB drives to the same account. The realy cool this is when I lost my data they sent it to me (encrypted) on a DVD, it arrived the next day. Check it out.

How much did perfect backup charge you for the dvd and postage? I ask cause I have a www.backupanytime.com account for free as masters student. Anyone studyiing for a masters can have one with 10 gig free during the course and 10 gig for price of 1 on completion. The idea is that I will get my future employers to use it....

Dave,
Thanks for the feedback. I heard the other day that Mozy.com got bought by some other company. Hopefully they don't change anything.

The overnight DVD from Perfectbackup is a great feature!! Do they have an unlimited account?
