Busy Busy Busy

Working On

Where does the time go?  Holy cow, where did June go?  For that matter where did the first half of 2008 go?  Can you believe it's the second half of the year already?  All those projects at work that I've been pushing off until the end of the year are now fast approaching.  Those will all have to wait until I can get this other stuff done.

Here is a short list of what I've been working on:

  • eTech Channel Web Site:  This is an internal web site that my group developed.  We are creating CNET TV like videos on the technology we are working on.  We launched the site on teh 23rd and so far the feedback has been good.  It's done in .Net which I'm not happy about but it will do for now.
  • Digital Signage: DS seems to be taking off lately.  We have one call center installing it now with another agreeing to install yesterday.  I'll have a meeting next week sometime with the President of the newest call center. I've been told  I need to create some content to WOW him.  I am working on a web site where users can create messages and have them posted on their digital signage board.  In short this works with the web site posting the message to the database and then the digital signage server reading the database for message and displaying them on the monitors.
  • Thunder:  Need to get caught up on our PolyVision Thunder Room.   Haven't performed too much on this project lately, although we did get network and power to all four tables in the room.  Thats 16 ports of network and 16 power jacks folks.  Go ahead, plug in!  I need to come up with a project to promote Thunder with amoung the employees in Dallas.  I think I'm going to call it "Thunder Days".  We want people to come see the room and then sign up to use the room for real meetings

Those seem to be the big three projects lately.  I've also be working on other little things but nothing work noting.  Lots of documentation.

Last Friday AT&T announced that we are moving our headquarters from San Antonio to Dallas.  That annoucment sure has shook things up here.   We have people moving others moving out.... crazyness.  I did get to meet our CEO, Randall Stephenson, yesterday.  That was very exciting, he's very tall!

Thats all for now.  I am still running and loving the Garmin 201 Forerunner device that Jenell let me borrow.  Ran almost 30 miles in June.

Good Day!

I Made a Difference!

The Web

Earlier in the week I told you about ITookThisOnMyPhone.com.  It's a cool application for your cell phone with web site that could use some work on the backend.  What it does is transfers any pictures you take with you phone to the web site automatically.

This week I sent an email off to their technical support team about some issues I was having with the site:

Just wanted to make you aware of a couple issues with your site.  Both
issues seem to appear when the GPS information is present on a photo in
IE 7.0.

1. When you are posting tags on a photo the Ajax code used to refresh
the tag area errors out and does not refresh.  There is a JavaScript
error.  The tags do get posted but you have to manually refresh the page

2. When adding a title to a picture the title area never refreshes, it
just gets stuck on "saving...".  The title does get added, but you have
to refresh the page manually to see the new title.

Again both of these issues happen in IE7 only when the GPS information
is present.

Thanks,
Ryan

Today I recieved a reply:

 Ryan,

Thank you very much for pointing out these issues and for being so
detailed in your descriptions of the problems. With your help I was able
to fix all of these bugs.

I hope you continue to use our service and please let me know if you
have any other problems with our site or application or if you have any
questions. Thank you so much for your help.

Thank you,

Took it Easy

Running

I took it a little easy today because I golfed 18 holes today.  No carts on the fairway meant a lot of walking.  I did have the best round of my life though.  We went out to the Cowboy Golf Club and it was awesome!

With that being said I ran only 1.34 miles.  The good news is I felt really good doing it and didn't need much time to cool down and catch my breath.  Awesome day all and all!

Good Day!

From Your Phone to the Web

The Web

Have you heard about the website ITookThisOnMyPhone.com?  It's a website hosts pictures taken from you camera phone.  At the heart of the site is an application that you download to your Windows Mobile or Blackberry device.  The application then send any pictures you take to your personal ITookThisOnMyPhone.com site.  My site is http://www.itookthisonmyphone.com/rme8494.  I have to say that the web site is not the greatest but the application itself is pretty cool.  There are plenty of options for uploading including:

  • Always ask before uploading
  • Delete after sending
  • Send GPS information (gps enabled phone required)
  • You can also label you pictures before you send them up

Once the picture is up on the site you can add a label and description.  You can also see where the phone was taken using the GPS information gathered from the phone and Google Maps.  Next you can tag the photos and put them into albums as well.  Like I said the site needs some work but the technology is neat.

Here is what I'd like to see from the web site

  • Comment notification when someone comments on your photo
  • The ability to havae friends, they have a contacts area but no way to add one
  • RSS feeds
  • A new look, it's pretty dated

Also of note make sure you have an unlimited data plan before downloading the application and sending photos.

Good Day!

2.15 miles!!!!!

Running

Well, I reached a milestone tonight, I ran across "the bridge".  This is the bridge that is right by my house and that I drive down several times a week.  The same bridge on which I pass runners while going 60 thinking they are nuts.  However today I was one of those nut jobs.

Starting out I thought the bridge itself was 3 miles long, but when we drove over it I found out it was only two miles.  Two miles!!??  Thats perfect I thought, 2 miles is my goal for the week.  So after dropping the kids and the wife off at gymnastics I hit the bridge.  It turns out that I didn't start in the right spot to complete the 2 mile bridge run.  So the run only ended up being 1.9 miles.  Fortunately I realized my mistake on the walk back and was able to finish with a 1/4 mile (.25 mile) run.   It wasn't 2 miles non stop, but it was over 2 miles total!

And I'm spent!

Good Day!
Ryan
