Earlier in the week I told you about ITookThisOnMyPhone.com. It's a cool application for your cell phone with web site that could use some work on the backend. What it does is transfers any pictures you take with you phone to the web site automatically.

This week I sent an email off to their technical support team about some issues I was having with the site:

Just wanted to make you aware of a couple issues with your site. Both
issues seem to appear when the GPS information is present on a photo in
IE 7.0.

1. When you are posting tags on a photo the Ajax code used to refresh
the tag area errors out and does not refresh. There is a JavaScript
error. The tags do get posted but you have to manually refresh the page

2. When adding a title to a picture the title area never refreshes, it
just gets stuck on "saving...". The title does get added, but you have
to refresh the page manually to see the new title.

Again both of these issues happen in IE7 only when the GPS information
is present.

From Your Phone to the Web

Have you heard about the website ITookThisOnMyPhone.com? It's a website hosts pictures taken from you camera phone. At the heart of the site is an application that you download to your Windows Mobile or Blackberry device. The application then send any pictures you take to your personal ITookThisOnMyPhone.com site. My site is http://www.itookthisonmyphone.com/rme8494. I have to say that the web site is not the greatest but the application itself is pretty cool. There are plenty of options for uploading including:

Always ask before uploading
Delete after sending
Send GPS information (gps enabled phone required)
You can also label you pictures before you send them up

Once the picture is up on the site you can add a label and description. You can also see where the phone was taken using the GPS information gathered from the phone and Google Maps. Next you can tag the photos and put them into albums as well. Like I said the site needs some work but the technology is neat.

Here is what I'd like to see from the web site

Comment notification when someone comments on your photo
The ability to havae friends, they have a contacts area but no way to add one
RSS feeds
A new look, it's pretty dated

Also of note make sure you have an unlimited data plan before downloading the application and sending photos.

Around the first of the year I blogged about mozy.com and their free online back-up. I just logged in today and noticed that I had 9.2gb worth of space based on all the referrals I've gotten. Not bad for a free account that started at 2gb!

Mozy.com Backup: Update

I haven’t blogged about ANYTHING in a while so I thought I’d throw this one out there. I’ve been having some issues with my Mozy back-up lately and I’m not sure why. It doesn’t appear to be automatically backing up as it did when I first loaded loaded the application. My desktop seems to be backed up ok, but the issues I'm having are with my laptop. It seems that the only time it will back-up is when I manually start the process. A few weeks ago Dave sent me an IM letting me know about an option in the configuration panel for Mozy. If checked the option, “attempt automatic backups even if network connection is not detected”, will attempt a back up even if it does not detect a network connection. I believe that may be my issue. I’m thinking when the laptop goes idle it drops the wireless network connection to save electricity. Thus if Mozy doesn’t see my network, it doesn’t back up. So I checked that box and we’ll see how it goes. Thanks for the tip Dave!

On a follow up to my other blog posts about Mozy, I’m still liking it a lot and I’m up to 6.5 gigs of free back up space. Thanks for all my readers who joined, there is at least 24 of you!

Google Personalized Home Page Lost

First my car battery, now this??? I've seemed to have joined the list of those who have lost their personalized Google homepage today . I swear 8:00am it was ok.. and at 8:15cst poof, gone! It's reverted to content I had in there, maybe a year a go.

It seems that this started happening to people last week on the 26th but is popping up again today. I believe when I clicked on the "add content" link that it caused my issue, but I don't know. All I do know is that am I bit lost right now. How sad is that???? All my links, blog feeds just gone!

Anyone else have this happen to them?

Mozy Free Remote Backup

It’s been a while since I blogged about my Mozy remote back-up tool so I thought I’d do a follow up. When I first blogged about Mozy it was in response to a computer crash I had where I lost documents, some pictures and all my MS Money files. Seriously, now how I’m I suppose to know how much I spent at McDonalds back in the spring of 2001? That was some important data to loose!

At any rate since I blogged a few months ago I’ve had Mozy running on my laptop and my desktop. I opted for the free 2 gig account for two reasons, one I was impressed with the freeness of it and second, I really don’t have a lot of data to back up. I back up all my pictures and mp3s on DVD so those are safe. So the various documents and financial data is all that really gets backed up. Even then those files are compressed so I’m no where near my 2 gig limit yet.

Another cool thing about Mozy is the referrals! Just based on my one post on Mozy I’ve gotten like 9 referrals. Referrals get you more space for you back ups. So as of today I’m up to 4.2 gig! Maybe I can get enough referrals to get my pictures backed up remotely too!

I love this blog and I love InstantSpot , thanks for having me!

Give Mozy a try and let me know what you think. They are now Intel based Mac friendly!

Did you know that GMail ignores periods (.) in email addresses? I just found this out when I received an email to ryaneverhart AT gmail DOT com. The email address I set up for my account was ryan DOT everhart AT gmail DOT com. Why would GMail ignore periods? Isn't this just another way for spammers to get an email to your inbox?

You can even even add periods to your email address so your.username@gmail.com is the same as y.o.u.r.u.s.e.r.n.a.m.e@gmail.com. Strange huh? What do you all think?

Mozy.com Online Backup

I never thought it would happen to me. I’m a computer savvy guy, I think. Hard drives don’t fail on the computer savvy, do they? Yes Ryan, yes they do. It happened to me this weekend we lost the Maxtor 40gb hard drive in our Dell Dimension 8300. With that, gone are some pictures that my wife had worked on (luckily not the originals), about six years worth of bank records and one year worth of school work for my Masters.

The good news is that the Dell Dimension 8300 is back up and running after a quick run to Wal-Mart for a 80gb Western Digital hard drive. Oh yes, Wal-Mart now sells hard drives. Where else can you get diapers, milk and a hard drive in one trip?

Needless to say this incident sent me looking for an backup solution, and not just a solution to back up to my bigger 250gb Western Digital hard drive, no. After all that’s a hard drive too. No, I wanted something more. I wanted a web back up solution something that I could set up and have it do all the work. After some searching I think I found one in mozy.com. At mozy.com you get 2gb worth of backup space for free and unlimited space for $4.95 a month. Additionally you can back up as many PCs on one account as you want. PLUS it compresses the data before it uploads it to the mozy.com servers. I had well over 2gb worth of data to be backed up yet I only used 550mb of back up storage.

So we’ll see how it goes, you can’t beat free and I appreciate the security of mozy being at work all the time. I just logged into my account and I see that the last backup was ran a couple hours ago and I wasn’t even there!

Interesting New Spot

There is a new Spot out there the web. And when I say Spot I mean InstantSpot. WichitaVoice.com has joined the InstantSpot community and while it mainly focuses on news and events in Wichita, Kansas the author has very interesting and enlightening opinions on subjects from identity theft to the war in Iraq. If you have a few mins check them out. It's good read.

Introducing codeShare by EverFro

It has been a long time coming but today we are releasing codeShare to the public. We’ve been looking to give something back to all those who have helped us in the past and that the community can use. So we designed codeShare as a simple site that allows users to share code with other developers. Instead of sending a file through e-mail simply post your code on codeShare, select the length of time to save the code, add any comments then send your private URL.

You can even add comments to each line individually. Fellow coders can then review your code and comments via the private URL you provide. They can even make comments or suggestions via the user comment form.

This project is very much a work in progress, but we believe it is good enough to release and start letting you all use. If you have any comments or suggestions please e-mail me at ryan DOT everhart AT gmail DOT com. We’d appreciate any and all feedback.

Great Spot Update

Well Dave and Aaron gave us a Christmas present in November. For those of you that don’t know, Dave and Aaron are the brains behind InstantSpot, the site you are viewing right now. What did they give us? They gave us the ability to right click again within a Spot! They did this by designing a new InstantSpot tool bar. See it’s up there ^ just above my header image. The old tool bar was a bit limiting to the site as it disabled right clicking and generally slowed the time it took to load pages. This new browser bar allows the page to load much faster and gives Dave and Aaron more flexibility as it is a homegrown solution. For more on this update check out Dave’s blog post about it here.

Thanks for all the work you guys are doing! I’ve heard there is much more to come.

Thanks to Dave and Aaron I got Google Analytics hooked up to my site. It just started collecting data and I’m rather new at understanding it all but from one I can tell I had 6 unique users today. That’s about 4 more than I thought I’d have. One visitor came all the way from Alaska!

Anyway thanks to Dave and Aaron for setting up this little community and for hooking me up with some stat tracking.
