codeShare Update!

Update update!!! everFro has updated the codeShare web site and would love for you to check it out. Some of the updates include:

New public shares! Got some great code you want to share with the world? Just mark it as public and the world will see! Don’t forget to leave a good comment so people will know exactly what your code does.
No more silly “add comment” link next to each line of code, now simply click on the comment bubble to the left of each line.
Clickable share URL on the final step. Before we only had a copy and pastable link, why? We don’t know!!
Finally, and probably most exciting “cf8 shares” there is a lot of great code out there for ColdFusion 8, why not put it all in one placed? Again, don’t forget to comment. Note for this type of share you have to have an account.

More to come, but we couldn’t wait to get these much needed updates out there for the users. So get out of here and start sharing!!

The Next Step for codeShare

As with any new site codeShare has had it’s peaks and valleys in traffic. Anytime we make an announcement about a new feature hits go up for a few days and then back down. We have a whole lot of "test" and "hello world" posts, but not a lot of code sharing yet. In your eyes what does codeShare need functionality wise or what do we need to do promotion wise to get the traffic coming. I’ve found two competitors (listed below), if you have time feel free to contrast and compare.

The first thing I noticed and you’ll probably notice too is that both of the other sites allow visitors to see what other visitors have posted. Is this really an important "feature"? My thought is that if you are working on some code that is not yet complete you don’t want the world to see, you just want to share it with people you trust.

Along the same lines of making code available for public viewing what do you all think about tagging your code. Would that be useful? Would it be nice to see all the mach-ii or CS code out there on our server?

Anyway just looking for some feedback. Thanks for your attention.

codeShare's New Home and New Features!

Well I’ve been hinting at big things coming, Dave and Aaron have been hinting at big things coming and they are finally here. The codeShare project now has a new home and some cool new features. There is now three, count them three, ways to share code with codeShare. Below is a summary of codeShare along with a brief description of the features.

We begin with a discussion on what codeShare is. codeShare is a site designed to give developers the ability to share their code via private URL. Users can posted their code to http://codeshare.ulatu.com, make any comments they would like and then share
their private URL with whomever they would like. They can even make comments on a per line level! Users can then review the code and make any comments they would like back to the original owner. It is an excellent way to debug code over instant messenger without having to send an attachment over e-mail.

The second feature of codeShare is the integration with the blogging and social networking site InstantSpot. This integration allows users to upload code to codeShare via their InstantSpot control panel. This is a nice enhancement for the project giving the coders the ability to easily save and share code via their InstantSpot blog.

The final feature, for now, of codeShare is the codeShare plug-in for Eclipse developed by Mark Drew. Mark went above and beyond the initial idea of the codeShare plug-in giving users the ability to easily post code to the codeShare web site without leaving Eclipse. Users can also view their codeShare history within Eclipse. Mark even gave codeShare users the ability to have their share from Eclipse added to their codeShare account by entering in their user name and password via the preferences window located on the file bar at window – preferences – codeshare.

Finally codeShare now has a new home at http://codeshare.ulatu.com. Pronounced “u-la-tu”, it doesn’t really mean anything, just kind of sounds cool. After all what did google mean before it was google? Anyway there is more stuff to come at ulatu.com , stay tuned!

Many many thanks need to go out to the folks that make this project possible. First to Dave and Aaron over at InstantSpot . They have been big supporters of this project since we originally came up with the idea last year. Their dedication and excitement to everything they do inspire us to do something more! Additionally a HUGE thanks needs to be sent out to Mark Drew. This guy is amazing. Taking what was a simple idea of right clicking on some code in Eclipse and then opening up codeShare turned into a full blown plug-in. There is no way we could have made the plug-in without Mark! Finally Todd Sharp over at <cfsilence> who came up with the idea for the plug-in on his ride into work one day. There would really be no plug-in if it weren’t for his idea!

codeShares Big Day

Well as I told Fro if there were a “cloud ten” I’d be on it right now, but for now I’ll just have to settle for “cloud nine” Yesterday was a big day for codeShare for three BIG reasons. For now I can only tell you about two of them, but the third will be coming soon.

First off users can now sign up for an account on codeShare. There are a couple benefits right now and more to come.

You can set code to never expire. After a user logs into the site they have the option to set their code to never expire. This is handy for the second piece of good news below
When a user selects their code to never expire codeShare can create links for the user’s blog or InstantSpot (oops that was second piece of big news). This is simple html code that can be cut and pasted into any blog entry (as long as they accept IFrames).

As I alluded to above the second piece of good news to share is that codeShare is now InstantSpot compatible. Users can simply enter something like [ codeShare nov29487 ] (without spaces) and their code will automatically be entered into their InstantSpot blog entry or page, like so:

How cool, and easy is that? So no longer is codeShare just an nice tool for troubleshooting code with other developers, but it can be a code repository for users that would like to share with the world!

Dave , Aaron and I have some other great ideas for codeShare and InstantSpot to come! This is just the beginning!

codeShare: A Call for Hits

Every good application needs to be tested right? Right! So this is my call for testers! We have some VERY COOL things in the works for codeShare but before they launch we need your help. We want to make sure that the current site is up to snuff and that people like what we’re doing. If you have a moment check out codeShare and share some code. codeShare Updates

We really do listen!! Based on some feedback we got about codeShare we have implemented some updates over the weekend. The updates might not LOOK that significant to the eye, but as we all know what the website looks like is only about a 1/3rd of the story.

Anyway we started updates by adding "pop-out codeShare". Pop-out codeShare allows users reviewing code the ability to view the code out side of the codeShare template in a no line numbers plain text format. The pop-out page has two sections. The first section is on top and allows the user to view all of the codeShare on a single page. The second section is that a same code presented in a large textarea box. This allows the user to quickly cut and paste the code if needed.

The second group of updates has to do with the codeShare window seen below. To start we fixed the line wrapping issue. Before long lines of code would wrap in FF and simply roll off the page in IE. This should have never been an issue but it was. Now the text does not wrap and the user can scroll to the right if needed. To save space on the screen we also limited the height of the codeShare window. Now for longer pieces of code the user can scroll up and down. Remeber if you want to see it all on one page without the scrolling click on the pop-out codeShare link.

The third update is minor and it introduces a new logo and a little color into the site. I'm a fan of orange lately and I think it really fits in. The site is still clean and simple, but the color adds a little more to it I think. More updates on the design to come I'm sure.

The last group of updates have been the most lengthy of the updates and unfortunately you can't see them yet. They have to do with users being able to sign up for an everFro Share account. A Share account will give users the ability to save their codeShares forever, review comments made on past shares and provide the ability to link to a codeShare outside of the codeShare and display them on your website, blog or community site. As I mentioned these updates aren't live yet, but are coming very soon. I promised certain people they would be done by the end of they year last November, but I didn't say which year HA!! Anyway we always appreciate feedback so please drop us a line on the the web site or on one of our blogs (Fro or myself ). codeShare is a project design as a tool to help you all and we hope that it does.

codeShare Update

For those of you that haven’t gotten a chance to listen yet the new version of ColdFusion Weekly podcast was released on Monday and much to our surprise codeShare was mentioned! So thanks to Matt and Peter we got a few more hits this week.

Robert and I are working on hard on updating codeShare per some of your suggestions. One small update was release last night and has do to with the final code display. We made the font and line spacing bigger along with color changes for easy reading.

Coming soon: user login and the ability to post code from codeShare to your blog.

Introducing codeShare by EverFro

It has been a long time coming but today we are releasing codeShare to the public. We’ve been looking to give something back to all those who have helped us in the past and that the community can use. So we designed codeShare as a simple site that allows users to share code with other developers. Instead of sending a file through e-mail simply post your code on codeShare, select the length of time to save the code, add any comments then send your private URL.

You can even add comments to each line individually. Fellow coders can then review your code and comments via the private URL you provide. They can even make comments or suggestions via the user comment form.

This project is very much a work in progress, but we believe it is good enough to release and start letting you all use. If you have any comments or suggestions please e-mail me at ryan DOT everhart AT gmail DOT com. We’d appreciate any and all feedback.

Challenge Accepted!

I’ve been called a lot of mean things in my life some to my face and surely more behind my back. However the other day I got called a name by a guy I don’t even know! This guy, Todd, if that is his real name, called me a lurker!!! A lurker??!! How can you call me a lurker if you don’t even know me Todd??

Well Todd didn’t just call me a lurker he called A LOT of ColdFusion developers lurkers or takers. We can define lurkers or takers in this case as developers that take code from blogs or other community sites but don’t give back to the community. For whatever reason, either they are too busy or too lazy they just don’t give back. Therefor Todd proposed a challenge. The challenge was for us all to get more involved in the ColdFusion Community, write a blog, join a CFUG or mailing list. Do something to give back.

Well Todd, challenge accepted! I’m going to try my best to make time to give back. What I say here on my InstantSpot may seem silly to those more experienced than I, so for that I apologize and welcome all feedback.
